Fort Smith Classroom Teachers’ Association wrapping gifts for needy students

December 10, 2013 - Members of the Fort Smith Classroom Teachers’ Association really demonstrated the spirit of Christmas again this year by providing gifts to over 420 needy students in the Fort Smith area. FSCTA, an AEA/NEA affiliate, has been organizing this project in conjunction with the Fort Smith Community Clearinghouse Backpack Program for over 20 years.

The project began with a fund raising campaign that netted over $1,500 to purchase the gifts. All the money was contributed by the Fort Smith Public School staff. The Fort Smith Community Clearinghouse, a nonprofit organization which provides weekend food for needy students, purchased gifts at a reduced price. On Tuesday, December 10, members of the Fort Smith Classroom Teachers’ Association along with student volunteers had a party and wrapped all the gifts. Finally, the gifts will be placed in students’ backpacks the last school day of the year.

The project organizer was FSCTA Treasurer, Sandy Hayes. Sandy said that over 60 people participated in wrapping the gifts. Everyone at the wrapping party agreed that it felt great to do something that will provide joy to students who otherwise might not receive a Christmas gift. GREAT JOB - FSCTA
